Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. The five-day festival runs from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. If you're hosting in Dubai, you have three real options: your own home, a private villa, or a venue. Each one changes the budget, the rules and the kind of night you'll have.
My family roots are in Mumbai, and I've spent twenty years in UAE hospitality. So I've been on both sides of this: the guest who ate too much mithai, and the planner who had to explain to a host why the dhol player couldn't start at 11pm. This is the guide I wish more families read in September.

Diwali isn't an official UAE public holiday. Many Indian businesses and community groups observe it, though, and plenty of residents take the main day off.
Here's the practical insight most guides miss. This year, Saturday 7 November is your party night. Sunday is for puja and family, and Monday is a working day for most people. Saturday gives you a late night with no alarm clock. It's also the date everyone else will want, which matters for booking.
The season also opens up that week. Global Village opens Season 31 on 14 October, so by Diwali the city's winter mood is well under way.
Home, villa or venue: which works for your guest list?
Your own home (up to around 35 guests). This is the most personal option and the cheapest on paper. But the costs hide in places you don't expect: extra hands in the kitchen, rented crockery, valet or parking arrangements, and a deep clean afterwards. In apartment buildings and some communities, you also have noise rules and building management to keep happy. It's the right choice for close family and friends, and the wrong choice for "everyone from the office."
A private villa (35 to 80 guests). This is the sweet spot for most families. You get the privacy of a home with space for a proper setup: a rangoli entrance, a puja corner that isn't squeezed between the sofa and the TV, a card table away from the kids, and room to dance. For reference, a 40th anniversary celebration we quoted in the Royal Villa at Raffles The Palm came to AED 41,000 including VAT. That's the kind of number an intimate villa celebration runs at when it's styled properly.
A venue (80 guests and up). Once you pass 80 guests, a hotel ballroom, garden or private venue usually makes more sense. Catering, service and logistics are built in, and you're not asking your neighbours for patience. The trade-off is permits and paperwork, plus less control over timings.
For scale, a 70-guest henna night we quoted at Bab Al Shams, with Arabic tablescaping, entertainment and a full design concept, came to AED 75,600 including VAT. A decor-led Diwali night at a similar size and standard sits in the same territory.
What does a Diwali party in Dubai cost?
The honest answer: guest count sets the floor, and styling sets the ceiling. These are the lines that move the number:
- Venue or villa hire. Zero at home. At a venue it's usually a food and beverage minimum spend rather than a hire fee.
- Catering. Live stations cost more than a buffet but feel like a party. Chaat, dosa and a jalebi counter will do more for the atmosphere than any centrepiece.
- Decor. Marigold garlands, diya walls, rangoli and lighting. Florals are where budgets drift, so decide early.
- Entertainment. A dhol entrance, a DJ, a live singer, or a card table with a dealer.
- Photography and video. One photographer for the puja and first hour usually covers it.
- Staffing, rentals and VAT. VAT is 5% in the UAE. Many online budgets forget it, and your supplier invoices won't.
Can you burst crackers in Dubai for Diwali?
No, and this is the rule that catches families out every year.
- Fines: Setting off fireworks without a permit can bring a fine of at least AED 50,000 and imprisonment under Federal Decree-Law No. 17 of 2019.
- Trading: Trading fireworks without a licence carries at least a year in prison and a fine of no less than AED 100,000.
- Permits: Fireworks permits exist, but they're issued only to businesses, not individuals. That means no permit for your villa terrace, however quietly you ask.
So give people a "wow" moment that won't get you a knock on the door:
- A diya wall or light tunnel at the entrance. It makes the arrival the moment.
- Projection of rangoli patterns onto the garden or a wall.
- A live dhol entrance for the first guests, timed early enough to respect neighbours.
- The public shows. Go and watch the official fireworks at the city's licensed displays, then come back to the party.
Many venues also restrict open flames. Always ask about the venue's candle and diya policy, and have LED diyas as a backup. They photograph beautifully and nobody's sari catches fire.
The rules nobody tells you
- Entertainment at hotels needs a permit. Dubai hotels typically require Dubai Economy and Tourism (DET) entertainment permission for private events with a DJ, band, dancers or other performers. It must be obtained through a DET-registered event management company. Your planner should handle this, and if they don't know what it is, that tells you something.
- Alcohol at hotel events has its own permit. When a Dubai rule change was reported, organisers had to apply for the alcohol permit at least 14 days in advance. Build that into your timeline.
- Paperwork deadlines are real. Some hotels ask for guest-of-honour details and event information seven working days before the date.
- Communities have their own noise rules. Check with your building or community management before you book a DJ for a villa party.
Diwali party ideas that feel like home, not a hotel buffet
- Teen patti tables with a proper dealer, set up away from the dance floor. Card night is Diwali tradition, and nobody wants to play next to a subwoofer.
- A live rangoli artist working at the entrance while guests arrive, finished by the time the puja starts.
- A real puja corner, placed and lit with care. It's the heart of the night, so don't put it next to the bar.
- A chai and cutting station late in the evening, which is when the best conversations happen.
- A kids' corner with diya painting and a sitter, so parents actually get to enjoy the party.
- Return gifts that aren't boxes of sweets everyone else is also giving: personalised brass diyas, spice tins, or a small print of the night's family photo.
How far ahead should you book?
Now. Diwali is seven weeks away, and Saturday 7 November will be the most requested night of the festival. Dhol players, decorators and Indian caterers are also heading into Indian wedding season, which starts at the same time. The best suppliers get double-booked first.
A realistic timeline:
- By early October: venue or villa confirmed, headcount roughly known.
- By mid-October: caterer, decor concept and entertainment locked, and permits started.
- Final week of October: final numbers, running order and supplier briefings.
