This year, the UAE's 55th National Day and the Formula 1 season finale run into each other. The National Day public holidays are 2 and 3 December, a Wednesday and Thursday. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix runs across the same week, with the race on Sunday 6 December. That creates a five-day window where a whole country is in the mood to celebrate. If you're hosting clients, staff or family, this is how to plan it.

I run Qrated Event from the UAE. This is also my home race, so I've watched this week unfold from both the paddock side and the traffic side.

The week at a glance

  • Sun 30 Nov: Commemoration Day, a solemn day of remembrance. Not a day for celebratory events.
  • Wed 2 Dec: Eid Al Etihad, the 55th National Day. Public holiday.
  • Thu 3 Dec: Public holiday. Grand Prix weekend opens, with Lewis Capaldi and Zara Larsson at the first after-race concert.
  • Fri 4 Dec: Practice day. It may become a holiday: the law lets eligible holidays move to create longer weekends, so watch for the official announcement.
  • Sat 5 Dec: Qualifying, with Imagine Dragons headlining the after-race concert at Etihad Park.
  • Sun 6 Dec: The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the season finale.

The after-race concerts are only open to Grand Prix ticket holders. If a concert is part of the draw, the race ticket is the entry pass.

Why this year is different

  • It's the 55th. Eid Al Etihad marks 55 years since the UAE was formed. Milestone years carry extra weight, both in the public celebrations and in how your UAE-based clients and staff will feel about the day.
  • The race is back on firm footing. F1 confirmed the Abu Dhabi finale in late August after months of uncertainty, and only a few tickets were left at that point.
  • The title may already be decided. If it is, Yas Marina becomes a victory party. If it isn't, it's the most tense race of the year. Either way, the atmosphere is there.
  • Hotels are hungry. Operators are expecting December occupancy in the 80s, but are protecting it with packages and offers around the Abu Dhabi race weekend and other winter events. That's leverage if you're booking room blocks.

Three ways to host across the week

1. The National Day dinner (2 December). This works best for UAE-based clients, partners and teams. It's the one night of the year where honouring the country you do business in is the whole point of the event. Done well, it feels like a thank-you, not a theme party.

What makes it land:

  • A majlis-style setting rather than rows of chairs.
  • Emirati cuisine as the centrepiece, not a token station.
  • Traditional performance such as Al Ayyala, presented with context so guests understand what they're watching.
  • Arabic calligraphy as a live activity or a personalised gift.
  • Timing: start early and finish at a sensible hour, since many guests will have family plans.

2. Race-day hospitality (5–6 December). This is for the clients you want to impress, and it's where most companies either overspend or underplan. Three tiers:

  • Grandstand plus a private dinner. Grandstand packages start from around AED 2,395 for four days, including the after-race concerts. Pair them with a private dinner the night before and you've built a weekend on a sensible budget.
  • Official premium hospitality. Paddock Club and similar suites give you the best food and views, and they're bookable. They're excellent, but you're sharing the room.
  • Private hospitality. A yacht in Yas Marina, a villa, or a private terrace, with transfers, food and your own people. This is the version your clients remember, and it needs the most lead time.

3. The full week (2–6 December). For your most important relationships: a National Day dinner on the 2nd, a quiet day on the 3rd or 4th (desert, spa or golf), then qualifying and the concert on the 5th and the race on the 6th. It's five days that show your clients the UAE the way residents actually live it.

Where to base your guests

  • Yas Island puts you closest to the circuit, but it's the first to fill and the most expensive.
  • Saadiyat Island is calmer and more luxurious, and a short drive away.
  • Dubai works if your guests are there for National Day too, but plan transfers carefully. Race-day traffic between the emirates adds real time. Allow a generous buffer.

Book room blocks now, and negotiate attrition terms so you're not paying for rooms your guests don't use.

Getting National Day right

This is a celebration of the country hosting you, so the details matter:

  • Treat the flag and national colours with respect, and follow official guidance on their use.
  • Don't schedule celebratory events on 30 November, which is Commemoration Day.
  • Brief any international guests on what the day means before they arrive. It changes how they experience it.
  • Keep the programme warm and proud, not loud for the sake of it.

Your timeline from today

  • Now to mid-October: decide your format and guest list, secure race tickets or hospitality, and book hotel room blocks.
  • By end of October: confirm the National Day dinner venue, and book entertainment and transfers.
  • November: confirm permits, menus, gifting and guest logistics.
  • Final week: guest briefings, transfer schedules and weather backup plans.
